Five2Watch: Installation

For #Five2Watch this week we've selected five artists who create installations: Michael Lent, Amelia Hawk, Tod Hanson, Charlotte Cullen and Holly Rowan Hesson.

untitled, series of 4,506 photograph installation, 2016

Michael Lent

Series of 4,506 photograph installation, each 102mm x 152mm

This installation was reverse-engineered to fit the specific gallery dimensions. First, I measured the dimensions and architectural components of each of the five walls of the gallery to determine how many 4x6 photographs could be fit onto the gallery walls in succession in an effort to almost displace the gallery site through this intervention. After determining the size of the walls and taking into consideration fire extinguishers, light switches, and so on I discerned that 4,506 photographs would fit the space. Dividing that by the amount of frames per second in a video, I determined that I could make a video just over 1 minute 35 seconds in length that would allow for an extraction of all the video frames to fit within the space.

The War Room, 2018

Amelia Hawk

The War Room is a fictitious play space for the capitalist profit driven Thorn Group whose main pre-occupation is to dominate the Grønland area of Oslo though aggressive gentrification. The installation shows hints of planned strategies to change the local area through development of leisure business, replacing the current local independent character of Grønland. Working in partnership with leading international coffee shop chains the Thorn Groups War Room is built around a strategy table in the heart of the room, where a high stakes casino game takes place.

The casino game hints towards current gentrification strategies in the area with initiatives such as Olav Thons militarisation of security and Starbucks new presence causing a ripple effect of closing down smaller businesses. The Thorn Group gambles casually on property occupation, slowly changing the face of the area.
