For The Love of Labour

Tuesday 13th November 2018, 2-6pm
Primary, Nottingham

A Day of Preparing, Cooking, Cooperating & Organising

This is a unique dinner invitation, to the lone worker, to share a place at the table.

What does the Culture of Work in Social Practice say about how we value each other and the Labour performed - paid, unpaid and emotional?

A day to lay the table with transparency, re-imagine how we’d like to live, work, grow, overcome struggle and co-inhabit the culture of work. We’re lining up some inventive ways of playing and working with our food, to explore individual experiences and shared working conditions and lay our questions out on the worktops. During the day we’ll be playing with materials, rearranging our food into more palatable structures and writing our own recipe/s for the future.

On The Menu/Things to Digest & Transform

  • Modes of Labour: Paid, Unpaid, Emotional
  • The difference between informal networks for support and workable structures
  • Conditions required for Social Practice & how to align Work Culture with capacity, care and growth

During the day we’ll prepare a meal together and consider our conditions for work and share experience whilst sharing in our collective labour and consuming the prepared meal. We’ll look at working conditions in the field of socially engaged practice – including negotiating contracts, getting appropriate support from organisations, isolation, precarity, unpaid labour and emotional labour. Connected to these structural questions are wider questions about care – and how to create the conditions needed to continue working as an artist in this field, and for this field to be accessible to a diverse range of artists. Through this get-together we’ll aim to nourish ourselves and nourish the future of the relationships in the room and beyond; and to generate collective tools for change.
