Coventry Biennial Commission Winners Announced

Still from 'A Litany'

Published: 19 July 2019

We are pleased to announce that Adelaida Antúnez Egurbide and Alfie Gibbs (known collectively as 'Mousethings') are the winners of our Coventry Biennial Commission Opportunity. They will be screening their film 'A Litany' (pt 1 & 2) at this year's Coventry Biennial which takes place 4 October - 24 November 2019.

On winning the award Adelaida and Alfie commented: We are excited to recieve this year’s Axisweb commission for the Coventry Biennial 2019. Working collaboratively, we will reconfigure a work that holds potential for the theme of this year’s programme. The exhibition will give us the opportunity and experience of engaging with such an outwardly facing contemporary arts festival. We would like to thank AxisWeb for this great oppurtunity!

About 'A Litany'

Accessed intimately through the position of a fictional narrator, the first part of A Litany is set in rural Catalonia, a landscape charged with a similar 'vote leave' sentiment to the second, situated across an anonymous post-war landscape on the periphery of London.

Moving between English and Spanish, the subtitles conceal subtle variations´in there translation. The grammatical person is misshapen, encountering a space outside of the city, where ones experience of a landscape is framed through dissociated image and text, spoken and written word. A semiotic dissonance arises between the thought, action and narration. The anxious behaviours enacted by the two women bring forth the question of what is instigating both persons to desperately search for their lost counterpart.
